Document Drill Down

The Document Drill Down feature allows you to focus the AI on specific source documents when asking a question.

Document Drill Down is a feature in Coheso’s AI Assist chat that allows users to narrow the AI’s focus to specific documents from their repository. Instead of searching through all organizational knowledge for every query, the assistant can be directed to consider only a chosen subset of documents (up to five at a time). This targeted approach is useful when the user already knows which document(s) likely contain the answer.

By default, the AI assistant considers all available company documents when answering questions, grounding its responses in the organization’s contracts, policies, and other records. Document Drill Down gives users control to override this default when needed. This guide walks through how Document Drill Down appears in the Coheso interface and how to use it effectively in conversations.

Locating the Document Drill Down Panel

The user can find the Document Drill Down panel on the right side of the chat interface. It is part of the sidebar, located just below the Evidence panel on the right rail.

Selecting Documents for AI Focus

To limit the AI’s scope, click on the Select documents field in the Document Drill Down panel. A searchable dropdown list of available documents from the organization’s repository will appear.

The user can then select one or multiple documents (up to five) to narrow the assistant’s focus for the conversation. As the documents are selected, they will appear listed in the Document Drill Down panel.

Asking Scoped Questions

Once one or more documents are selected, any question the user asks will be answered by the AI using only those specific documents as reference source. The assistant limits its reasoning and citations to the selected files, ensuring the response is grounded in the chosen source. Follow-up questions in the same conversation remain scoped to the current document selection unless the user changes the selection. This means the context of the conversation will stay focused on the originally chosen documents until modified.

Modifying Document Scope

Document Drill Down filters can be adjusted at any time, giving users flexibility during a conversation. The user can remove or add documents in the middle of a conversation to refine what the AI focuses on. Updating the document selection immediately narrows or broadens the assistant’s focus for subsequent responses. Removing one of the selected documents will restrict the AI to whatever documents remain, while adding another document will expand the pool of sources that the AI can draw from for answers.

  • Adding or changing filters mid-conversation

The user may decide to refine the context after an initial question. At any point in an ongoing chat, they can open “Select documents…” again and modify the selection (choose additional documents or deselect some). Once changed, the new selection will apply to all following questions in that same conversation. The assistant’s subsequent responses will be limited to the updated set of documents

  • Removing filters

If the user deselects all chosen documents, the Document Drill Down filter is turned off for that conversation. Subsequent queries will again consider the full repository by default, just as a new conversation would.

Managing Document Scope via the Evidence Panel

When the assistant provides an answer, the Evidence panel on the right shows the passages and sources used in the response. This panel highlights exactly which documents and snippets, the AI, relied on for its answer, allowing the user to quickly inspect those sources for context. Additionally, the user can manage the Document Drill Down selection directly from the Evidence panel. For instance, each source document listed in Evidence may have a plus (+) or minus (–) icon next to it. Clicking the minus (–) will remove that document from the scope, while clicking the plus (+) on a document in the Evidence panel will add that document to the Document Drill Down scope.

Automatic Reset on New Chats

Document Drill Down settings do not carry over to new conversations. Each conversation session begins with a fresh state (no documents pre-selected). When a user starts a New Conversation, the filter is reset to none, meaning the assistant will use all documents unless the user actively selects some.
